"Short to medium rather stiff tufted perennial, bluish-green. Basal leaves leatherly, rounded or heart-shaped in outline, but 3-5-lobed with an indulate, densely spiny margin; the veins and margins whitish; stalk unwinged. Flowers purple-blue, in dense rounded heads, 15-30mm, forming a spreading inflorescence; bract oval, coarsely spiny. Fruit egg-shaped, densely scaly.Habitat: Maritime sands and fine shingle, occasionally among rocks, sometines forming extensive colonies.Flowering Season: June-September.Distribution: Coasts of Europe north to S. Scandinavia. Local from NW Europe to the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Sometimes cultivated in Gardens.Related images:"
